بِسۡمِ اللّٰہِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِیۡمِ ﴿۱﴾
In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful.Surah 90 · Meccan
Al-Balad
The City
البلد
21 verses · Maulawi Sher Ali translation
لَاۤ اُقۡسِمُ بِہٰذَا الۡبَلَدِ ۙ﴿۲﴾
Nay, but I do swear by this city —وَاَنۡتَ حِلٌّۢ بِہٰذَا الۡبَلَدِ ۙ﴿۳﴾
And thou art dwelling in this city —وَوَالِدٍ وَّمَا وَلَدَ ۙ﴿۴﴾
And I swear by the begetter and whom he begot,لَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا الۡاِنۡسَانَ فِیۡ کَبَدٍ ؕ﴿۵﴾
We have surely created man to face hardships.اَیَحۡسَبُ اَنۡ لَّنۡ یَّقۡدِرَ عَلَیۡہِ اَحَدٌ ۘ﴿۶﴾
Does he think that no one has power over him?یَقُوۡلُ اَہۡلَکۡتُ مَالًا لُّبَدًا ؕ﴿۷﴾
He says, ‘I have spent enormous wealth.’اَیَحۡسَبُ اَنۡ لَّمۡ یَرَہٗۤ اَحَدٌ ؕ﴿۸﴾
Does he think that no one sees him?اَلَمۡ نَجۡعَلۡ لَّہٗ عَیۡنَیۡنِ ۙ﴿۹﴾
Have We not given him two eyes,وَلِسَانًا وَّشَفَتَیۡنِ ۙ﴿۱۰﴾
And a tongue and two lips?90:11

وَہَدَیۡنٰہُ النَّجۡدَیۡنِ ﴿ۚ۱۱﴾
[✲]And We have pointed out to him the two highways of good and evil.90:12

فَلَا اقۡتَحَمَ الۡعَقَبَۃَ ﴿۫ۖ۱۲﴾
[✲]But he attempted not the ascent courageously.90:13

وَمَاۤ اَدۡرٰٮکَ مَا الۡعَقَبَۃُ ﴿ؕ۱۳﴾
[✲]And what should make thee know what the ascent is?فَکُّ رَقَبَۃٍ ﴿ۙ۱۴﴾
It is the freeing of a slave.اَوۡ اِطۡعٰمٌ فِیۡ یَوۡمٍ ذِیۡ مَسۡغَبَۃٍ ﴿ۙ۱۵﴾
Or feeding in a day of hungerیَّتِیۡمًا ذَا مَقۡرَبَۃٍ ﴿ۙ۱۶﴾
An orphan near of kin,اَوۡ مِسۡکِیۡنًا ذَا مَتۡرَبَۃٍ ﴿ؕ۱۷﴾
Or a poor man lying in the dust.ثُمَّ کَانَ مِنَ الَّذِیۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا وَتَوَاصَوۡا بِالصَّبۡرِ وَتَوَاصَوۡا بِالۡمَرۡحَمَۃِ ﴿ؕ۱۸﴾
Again, he should have been of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to mercy.اُولٰٓئِکَ اَصۡحٰبُ الۡمَیۡمَنَۃِ ﴿ؕ۱۹﴾
These are the people of the right hand.وَالَّذِیۡنَ کَفَرُوۡا بِاٰیٰتِنَا ہُمۡ اَصۡحٰبُ الۡمَشۡـَٔمَۃِ ﴿ؕ۲۰﴾
But those who disbelieve Our Signs, they are the people of the left hand.90:21

عَلَیۡہِمۡ نَارٌ مُّؤۡصَدَۃٌ ﴿٪۲۱﴾
[✲]Around them will be a fire closed over.Al-Balad — The City
