بِسۡمِ اللّٰہِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِیۡمِ ﴿۱﴾
In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful.Surah 83 · Meccan
Al-Tatfif
Default in Duty
المطففين
37 verses · Maulawi Sher Ali translation
وَیۡلٌ لِّلۡمُطَفِّفِیۡنَ ۙ﴿۲﴾
Woe unto those who give short measure;الَّذِیۡنَ اِذَا اکۡتَالُوۡا عَلَی النَّاسِ یَسۡتَوۡفُوۡنَ ۫﴿ۖ۳﴾
Those who, when they take by measure from other people, take it full;وَاِذَا کَالُوۡہُمۡ اَوۡ وَّزَنُوۡہُمۡ یُخۡسِرُوۡنَ ﴿ؕ۴﴾
But when they give by measure to others or weigh to them, they give them less.اَلَا یَظُنُّ اُولٰٓئِکَ اَنَّہُمۡ مَّبۡعُوۡثُوۡنَ ۙ﴿۵﴾
Do not such people know that they will be raised againلِیَوۡمٍ عَظِیۡمٍ ۙ﴿۶﴾
Unto a terrible day,یَّوۡمَ یَقُوۡمُ النَّاسُ لِرَبِّ الۡعٰلَمِیۡنَ ؕ﴿۷﴾
The day when mankind will stand before the Lord of the worlds?کَلَّاۤ اِنَّ کِتٰبَ الۡفُجَّارِ لَفِیۡ سِجِّیۡنٍ ؕ﴿۸﴾
Nay! the record of the wicked is in Sijjin.وَمَاۤ اَدۡرٰٮکَ مَا سِجِّیۡنٌ ؕ﴿۹﴾
And what should make thee know what Sijjin is?کِتٰبٌ مَّرۡقُوۡمٌ ؕ﴿۱۰﴾
It is a Book written comprehensively.وَیۡلٌ یَّوۡمَئِذٍ لِّلۡمُکَذِّبِیۡنَ ﴿ۙ۱۱﴾
Woe, on that day, unto those who reject,الَّذِیۡنَ یُکَذِّبُوۡنَ بِیَوۡمِ الدِّیۡنِ ﴿ؕ۱۲﴾
Who deny the Day of Judgment.وَمَا یُکَذِّبُ بِہٖۤ اِلَّا کُلُّ مُعۡتَدٍ اَثِیۡمٍ ﴿ۙ۱۳﴾
And none denies it save every sinful transgressor,اِذَا تُتۡلٰی عَلَیۡہِ اٰیٰتُنَا قَالَ اَسَاطِیۡرُ الۡاَوَّلِیۡنَ ﴿ؕ۱۴﴾
Who, when Our Signs are recited unto him, says: ‘Fables of the ancients!’کَلَّا بَلۡ ٜ رَانَ عَلٰی قُلُوۡبِہِمۡ مَّا کَانُوۡا یَکۡسِبُوۡنَ ﴿۱۵﴾
Nay, but that which they have earned has rusted their hearts.کَلَّاۤ اِنَّہُمۡ عَنۡ رَّبِّہِمۡ یَوۡمَئِذٍ لَّمَحۡجُوۡبُوۡنَ ﴿ؕ۱۶﴾
Nay, they will surely be debarred from seeing their Lord on that day.ثُمَّ اِنَّہُمۡ لَصَالُوا الۡجَحِیۡمِ ﴿ؕ۱۷﴾
Then, verily, they will burn in Hell,ثُمَّ یُقَالُ ہٰذَا الَّذِیۡ کُنۡتُمۡ بِہٖ تُکَذِّبُوۡنَ ﴿ؕ۱۸﴾
Then it will be said to them, ‘This is what you used to reject.’کَلَّاۤ اِنَّ کِتٰبَ الۡاَبۡرَارِ لَفِیۡ عِلِّیِّیۡنَ ﴿ؕ۱۹﴾
Nay! but the record of the virtuous is surely in ‘Illiyyin.وَمَاۤ اَدۡرٰٮکَ مَا عِلِّیُّوۡنَ ﴿ؕ۲۰﴾
And what should make thee know what ‘Illiyyun is?کِتٰبٌ مَّرۡقُوۡمٌ ﴿ۙ۲۱﴾
It is a Book written comprehensively.یَّشۡہَدُہُ الۡمُقَرَّبُوۡنَ ﴿ؕ۲۲﴾
The chosen ones of God will witness it.اِنَّ الۡاَبۡرَارَ لَفِیۡ نَعِیۡمٍ ﴿ۙ۲۳﴾
Surely the virtuous will be in bliss,عَلَی الۡاَرَآئِکِ یَنۡظُرُوۡنَ ﴿ۙ۲۴﴾
Seated on couches, gazing.تَعۡرِفُ فِیۡ وُجُوۡہِہِمۡ نَضۡرَۃَ النَّعِیۡمِ ﴿ۚ۲۵﴾
Thou wilt find in their faces the freshness of bliss.یُسۡقَوۡنَ مِنۡ رَّحِیۡقٍ مَّخۡتُوۡمٍ ﴿ۙ۲۶﴾
They will be given to drink of a pure sealed beverage,خِتٰمُہٗ مِسۡکٌ ؕ وَفِیۡ ذٰلِکَ فَلۡیَتَنَافَسِ الۡمُتَنَافِسُوۡنَ ﴿ؕ۲۷﴾
The sealing of it will be with musk — for this let the aspirants aspire —وَمِزَاجُہٗ مِنۡ تَسۡنِیۡمٍ ﴿ۙ۲۸﴾
And it will be tempered with the water of Tasnim,عَیۡنًا یَّشۡرَبُ بِہَا الۡمُقَرَّبُوۡنَ ﴿ؕ۲۹﴾
A spring of which the chosen ones will drink.اِنَّ الَّذِیۡنَ اَجۡرَمُوۡا کَانُوۡا مِنَ الَّذِیۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا یَضۡحَکُوۡنَ ﴿۫ۖ۳۰﴾
Those who were guilty used to laugh at those who believed;وَاِذَا مَرُّوۡا بِہِمۡ یَتَغَامَزُوۡنَ ﴿۫ۖ۳۱﴾
And when they passed by them, they winked at one another.وَاِذَا انۡقَلَبُوۡۤا اِلٰۤی اَہۡلِہِمُ انۡقَلَبُوۡا فَکِہِیۡنَ ﴿۫ۖ۳۲﴾
And when they returned to their families they returned exulting;وَاِذَا رَاَوۡہُمۡ قَالُوۡۤا اِنَّ ہٰۤؤُلَآءِ لَضَآلُّوۡنَ ﴿ۙ۳۳﴾
And when they saw them they said, ‘These indeed are the lost ones!’وَمَاۤ اُرۡسِلُوۡا عَلَیۡہِمۡ حٰفِظِیۡنَ ﴿ؕ۳۴﴾
But they were not sent as keepers over them.فَالۡیَوۡمَ الَّذِیۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا مِنَ الۡکُفَّارِ یَضۡحَکُوۡنَ ﴿ۙ۳۵﴾
This day, therefore, it is the believers who will laugh at the disbelievers,عَلَی الۡاَرَآئِکِ ۙ یَنۡظُرُوۡنَ ﴿ؕ۳۶﴾
Seated on couches, gazing.ہَلۡ ثُوِّبَ الۡکُفَّارُ مَا کَانُوۡا یَفۡعَلُوۡنَ ﴿٪۳۷﴾
Are not the disbelievers duly paid for what they did?Al-Tatfif — Default in Duty
