بِسۡمِ اللّٰہِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِیۡمِ ﴿۱﴾
In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful.Surah 74 · Meccan
Al-Muddaththir
The Cloaked One
المدثر
57 verses · Maulawi Sher Ali translation
یٰۤاَیُّہَا الۡمُدَّثِّرُ ۙ﴿۲﴾
O thou that has wrapped thyself with thy mantle!قُمۡ فَاَنۡذِرۡ ۪ۙ﴿۳﴾
Arise and warn.74:4

وَرَبَّکَ فَکَبِّرۡ ۪﴿ۙ۴﴾
[✲]And thy Lord do thou magnify.74:5

وَثِیَابَکَ فَطَہِّرۡ ۪﴿ۙ۵﴾
[✲]And thy heart do thou purify,وَالرُّجۡزَ فَاہۡجُرۡ ۪﴿ۙ۶﴾
And uncleanliness do thou shun,وَلَا تَمۡنُنۡ تَسۡتَکۡثِرُ ۪﴿ۙ۷﴾
And bestow not favours seeking to get more in return,وَلِرَبِّکَ فَاصۡبِرۡ ؕ﴿۸﴾
And for the sake of thy Lord do thou endure patiently.فَاِذَا نُقِرَ فِی النَّاقُوۡرِ ۙ﴿۹﴾
And when the trumpet is sounded,فَذٰلِکَ یَوۡمَئِذٍ یَّوۡمٌ عَسِیۡرٌ ۙ﴿۱۰﴾
That day will be a distressful day.عَلَی الۡکٰفِرِیۡنَ غَیۡرُ یَسِیۡرٍ ﴿۱۱﴾
For the disbelievers it will be anything but easy.ذَرۡنِیۡ وَمَنۡ خَلَقۡتُ وَحِیۡدًا ﴿ۙ۱۲﴾
Leave Me to deal with him whom I created alone,وَّجَعَلۡتُ لَہٗ مَالًا مَّمۡدُوۡدًا ﴿ۙ۱۳﴾
And then I gave him abundant wealth,وَّبَنِیۡنَ شُہُوۡدًا ﴿ۙ۱۴﴾
And sons, abiding in his presence,وَّمَہَّدۡتُّ لَہٗ تَمۡہِیۡدًا ﴿ۙ۱۵﴾
And I prepared for him all necessary things.ثُمَّ یَطۡمَعُ اَنۡ اَزِیۡدَ ﴿٭ۙ۱۶﴾
Yet he desires that I should give him more.کَلَّا ؕ اِنَّہٗ کَانَ لِاٰیٰتِنَا عَنِیۡدًا ﴿ؕ۱۷﴾
Certainly not! for he has been hostile to Our Signs.سَاُرۡہِقُہٗ صَعُوۡدًا ﴿ؕ۱۸﴾
I shall soon inflict on him an overwhelming hardship.اِنَّہٗ فَکَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ ﴿ۙ۱۹﴾
Lo! he reflected and calculated!فَقُتِلَ کَیۡفَ قَدَّرَ ﴿ۙ۲۰﴾
Ruin seize him! how he calculated!ثُمَّ قُتِلَ کَیۡفَ قَدَّرَ ﴿ۙ۲۱﴾
Ruin seize him again! how he calculated!ثُمَّ نَظَرَ ﴿ۙ۲۲﴾
Then he looked,ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ ﴿ۙ۲۳﴾
Then he frowned and scowled,ثُمَّ اَدۡبَرَ وَاسۡتَکۡبَرَ ﴿ۙ۲۴﴾
Then he turned away and was disdainful,فَقَالَ اِنۡ ہٰذَاۤ اِلَّا سِحۡرٌ یُّؤۡثَرُ ﴿ۙ۲۵﴾
And said, ‘This is nothing but magic handed down;اِنۡ ہٰذَاۤ اِلَّا قَوۡلُ الۡبَشَرِ ﴿ؕ۲۶﴾
‘This is nothing but the word of man.’74:27

سَاُصۡلِیۡہِ سَقَرَ ﴿۲۷﴾
[✲]Soon shall I cast him into the fire of Hell.74:28

وَمَاۤ اَدۡرٰٮکَ مَا سَقَرُ ﴿ؕ۲۸﴾
[✲]And what makes thee know what Hell-fire is?74:29

لَا تُبۡقِیۡ وَلَا تَذَرُ ﴿ۚ۲۹﴾
[✲]It spares not and it leaves naught.74:30

لَوَّاحَۃٌ لِّلۡبَشَرِ ﴿ۚۖ۳۰﴾
[✲]It scorches the face.عَلَیۡہَا تِسۡعَۃَ عَشَرَ ﴿ؕ۳۱﴾
Over it are nineteen angels.وَمَا جَعَلۡنَاۤ اَصۡحٰبَ النَّارِ اِلَّا مَلٰٓئِکَۃً ۪ وَّمَا جَعَلۡنَا عِدَّتَہُمۡ اِلَّا فِتۡنَۃً لِّلَّذِیۡنَ کَفَرُوۡا ۙ لِیَسۡتَیۡقِنَ الَّذِیۡنَ اُوۡتُوا الۡکِتٰبَ وَیَزۡدَادَ الَّذِیۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡۤا اِیۡمَانًا وَّلَا یَرۡتَابَ الَّذِیۡنَ اُوۡتُوا الۡکِتٰبَ وَالۡمُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ ۙ وَلِیَقُوۡلَ الَّذِیۡنَ فِیۡ قُلُوۡبِہِمۡ مَّرَضٌ وَّالۡکٰفِرُوۡنَ مَاذَاۤ اَرَادَ اللّٰہُ بِہٰذَا مَثَلًا ؕ کَذٰلِکَ یُضِلُّ اللّٰہُ مَنۡ یَّشَآءُ وَیَہۡدِیۡ مَنۡ یَّشَآءُ ؕ وَمَا یَعۡلَمُ جُنُوۡدَ رَبِّکَ اِلَّا ہُوَ ؕ وَمَا ہِیَ اِلَّا ذِکۡرٰی لِلۡبَشَرِ ﴿٪۳۲﴾
And none but angels have We made wardens of the Fire. And We have not fixed their number except as a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who have been given the Book may attain to certainty, and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who have been given the Book as well as the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is disease and the disbelievers may say, ‘What does Allah mean by such an illustration?’ Thus does Allah adjudge astray whom He pleases and guide whom He pleases. And none knows the hosts of thy Lord but He. And this is nothing but a Reminder for man.کَلَّا وَالۡقَمَرِ ﴿ۙ۳۳﴾
Nay, by the moon,وَالَّیۡلِ اِذۡ اَدۡبَرَ ﴿ۙ۳۴﴾
And by the night when it retreats,وَالصُّبۡحِ اِذَاۤ اَسۡفَرَ ﴿ۙ۳۵﴾
And by the dawn when it shines forth,اِنَّہَا لَاِحۡدَی الۡکُبَرِ ﴿ۙ۳۶﴾
Verily, it is one of the greatest calamities.نَذِیۡرًا لِّلۡبَشَرِ ﴿ۙ۳۷﴾
A warning to man,لِمَنۡ شَآءَ مِنۡکُمۡ اَنۡ یَّتَقَدَّمَ اَوۡ یَتَاَخَّرَ ﴿ؕ۳۸﴾
To him among you who wishes to advance or hang back.کُلُّ نَفۡسٍۭ بِمَا کَسَبَتۡ رَہِیۡنَۃٌ ﴿ۙ۳۹﴾
Every soul is pledged for what it has earned;اِلَّاۤ اَصۡحٰبَ الۡیَمِیۡنِ ﴿ؕۛ۴۰﴾
Except those on the right hand.فِیۡ جَنّٰتٍ ۟ؕۛ یَتَسَآءَلُوۡنَ ﴿ۙ۴۱﴾
They will be in Gardens asking one anotherعَنِ الۡمُجۡرِمِیۡنَ ﴿ۙ۴۲﴾
Concerning the guilty ones.74:43

مَا سَلَکَکُمۡ فِیۡ سَقَرَ ﴿۴۳﴾
[✲]‘What has brought you into the Fire of Hell?’قَالُوۡا لَمۡ نَکُ مِنَ الۡمُصَلِّیۡنَ ﴿ۙ۴۴﴾
They will say, ‘We were not of those who offered Prayers,وَلَمۡ نَکُ نُطۡعِمُ الۡمِسۡکِیۡنَ ﴿ۙ۴۵﴾
‘Nor did we feed the poor.وَکُنَّا نَخُوۡضُ مَعَ الۡخَآئِضِیۡنَ ﴿ۙ۴۶﴾
‘And we indulged in objectionable talk with those who indulge therein.وَکُنَّا نُکَذِّبُ بِیَوۡمِ الدِّیۡنِ ﴿ۙ۴۷﴾
‘And we used to deny the Day of Judgment,حَتّٰۤی اَتٰٮنَا الۡیَقِیۡنُ ﴿ؕ۴۸﴾
‘Until death overtook us.’فَمَا تَنۡفَعُہُمۡ شَفَاعَۃُ الشّٰفِعِیۡنَ ﴿ؕ۴۹﴾
So the intercession of intercessors will not avail them.فَمَا لَہُمۡ عَنِ التَّذۡکِرَۃِ مُعۡرِضِیۡنَ ﴿ۙ۵۰﴾
Now what is the matter with them that they are turning away from the exhortation,کَاَنَّہُمۡ حُمُرٌ مُّسۡتَنۡفِرَۃٌ ﴿ۙ۵۱﴾
As if they were frightened assesفَرَّتۡ مِنۡ قَسۡوَرَۃٍ ﴿ؕ۵۲﴾
Fleeing from a lion?بَلۡ یُرِیۡدُ کُلُّ امۡرِیٴٍ مِّنۡہُمۡ اَنۡ یُّؤۡتٰی صُحُفًا مُّنَشَّرَۃً ﴿ۙ۵۳﴾
Nay, every man among them desires to have open sheets of revelation given to him.کَلَّا ؕ بَلۡ لَّا یَخَافُوۡنَ الۡاٰخِرَۃَ ﴿ؕ۵۴﴾
Never! verily they fear not the Hereafter.کَلَّاۤ اِنَّہٗ تَذۡکِرَۃٌ ﴿ۚ۵۵﴾
Never! verily this is an exhortation.فَمَنۡ شَآءَ ذَکَرَہٗ ﴿ؕ۵۶﴾
Let him, then, who will, remember it.وَمَا یَذۡکُرُوۡنَ اِلَّاۤ اَنۡ یَّشَآءَ اللّٰہُ ؕ ہُوَ اَہۡلُ التَّقۡوٰی وَاَہۡلُ الۡمَغۡفِرَۃِ ﴿٪۵۷﴾
And they will not remember unless Allah so please. He alone is worthy to be feared and He alone is worthy to forgive.Al-Muddaththir — The Cloaked One
