بِسۡمِ اللّٰہِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِیۡمِ ﴿۱﴾
In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful.Surah 70 · Meccan
Al-Ma‘arij
The Ascending Stairways
المعارج
45 verses · Maulawi Sher Ali translation
سَاَلَ سَآئِلٌۢ بِعَذَابٍ وَّاقِعٍ ۙ﴿۲﴾
An inquirer inquires concerning the punishment about to fallلِّلۡکٰفِرِیۡنَ لَیۡسَ لَہٗ دَافِعٌ ۙ﴿۳﴾
Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel.مِّنَ اللّٰہِ ذِی الۡمَعَارِجِ ؕ﴿۴﴾
It is from Allah, Lord of great ascents.تَعۡرُجُ الۡمَلٰٓئِکَۃُ وَالرُّوۡحُ اِلَیۡہِ فِیۡ یَوۡمٍ کَانَ مِقۡدَارُہٗ خَمۡسِیۡنَ اَلۡفَ سَنَۃٍ ۚ﴿۵﴾
The angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years.فَاصۡبِرۡ صَبۡرًا جَمِیۡلًا ﴿۶﴾
So be patient with admirable patience.اِنَّہُمۡ یَرَوۡنَہٗ بَعِیۡدًا ۙ﴿۷﴾
They see it to be far off,وَّنَرٰٮہُ قَرِیۡبًا ؕ﴿۸﴾
But We see it to be nigh.یَوۡمَ تَکُوۡنُ السَّمَآءُ کَالۡمُہۡلِ ۙ﴿۹﴾
The day when the heaven will become like molten copper,وَتَکُوۡنُ الۡجِبَالُ کَالۡعِہۡنِ ۙ﴿۱۰﴾
And the mountains will become like flakes of wool,وَلَا یَسۡـَٔلُ حَمِیۡمٌ حَمِیۡمًا ﴿ۚۖ۱۱﴾
And a friend will not inquire after a friend.یُّبَصَّرُوۡنَہُمۡ ؕ یَوَدُّ الۡمُجۡرِمُ لَوۡ یَفۡتَدِیۡ مِنۡ عَذَابِ یَوۡمِئِذٍۭ بِبَنِیۡہِ ﴿ۙ۱۲﴾
They will be placed in sight of one another, and the guilty one would fain ransom himself from the punishment of that day by offering his children,وَصَاحِبَتِہٖ وَاَخِیۡہِ ﴿ۙ۱۳﴾
And his wife and his brother,وَفَصِیۡلَتِہِ الَّتِیۡ تُــٔۡوِیۡہِ ﴿ۙ۱۴﴾
And his kinsfolk who sheltered him,وَمَنۡ فِی الۡاَرۡضِ جَمِیۡعًا ۙ ثُمَّ یُنۡجِیۡہِ ﴿ۙ۱۵﴾
And by offering all those who are on the earth, if only thus he might save himself.کَلَّا ؕ اِنَّہَا لَظٰی ﴿ۙ۱۶﴾
But no! surely it is a flame of Fire,نَزَّاعَۃً لِّلشَّوٰی ﴿ۚۖ۱۷﴾
Stripping off the skin even to the extremities of the body.تَدۡعُوۡا مَنۡ اَدۡبَرَ وَتَوَلّٰی ﴿ۙ۱۸﴾
It will call him who turned his back and retreatedوَجَمَعَ فَاَوۡعٰی ﴿۱۹﴾
And hoarded wealth, and withheld it.اِنَّ الۡاِنۡسَانَ خُلِقَ ہَلُوۡعًا ﴿ۙ۲۰﴾
Verily, man is born impatient and miserly.اِذَا مَسَّہُ الشَّرُّ جَزُوۡعًا ﴿ۙ۲۱﴾
When evil touches him, he is full of lamentation,وَّاِذَا مَسَّہُ الۡخَیۡرُ مَنُوۡعًا ﴿ۙ۲۲﴾
But when good falls to his lot, he is niggardly.اِلَّا الۡمُصَلِّیۡنَ ﴿ۙ۲۳﴾
But not those who pray.الَّذِیۡنَ ہُمۡ عَلٰی صَلَاتِہِمۡ دَآئِمُوۡنَ ﴿۪ۙ۲۴﴾
Those who are constant in their Prayer,وَالَّذِیۡنَ فِیۡۤ اَمۡوَالِہِمۡ حَقٌّ مَّعۡلُوۡمٌ ﴿۪ۙ۲۵﴾
And those in whose wealth there is a recognized right70:26

لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَالۡمَحۡرُوۡمِ ﴿۪ۙ۲۶﴾
[✲]For one who asks for help and for one who does not.وَالَّذِیۡنَ یُصَدِّقُوۡنَ بِیَوۡمِ الدِّیۡنِ ﴿۪ۙ۲۷﴾
And those who believe the Day of Judgment to be a reality,وَالَّذِیۡنَ ہُمۡ مِّنۡ عَذَابِ رَبِّہِمۡ مُّشۡفِقُوۡنَ ﴿ۚ۲۸﴾
And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord —70:29

اِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّہِمۡ غَیۡرُ مَاۡمُوۡنٍ ﴿۲۹﴾
[✲]Verily the punishment of their Lord is not a thing to feel secure from —وَالَّذِیۡنَ ہُمۡ لِفُرُوۡجِہِمۡ حٰفِظُوۡنَ ﴿ۙ۳۰﴾
And those who guard their private parts —اِلَّا عَلٰۤی اَزۡوَاجِہِمۡ اَوۡ مَا مَلَکَتۡ اَیۡمَانُہُمۡ فَاِنَّہُمۡ غَیۡرُ مَلُوۡمِیۡنَ ﴿ۚ۳۱﴾
Except from their wives and from those whom their right hands possess; such indeed are not to blame;فَمَنِ ابۡتَغٰی وَرَآءَ ذٰلِکَ فَاُولٰٓئِکَ ہُمُ الۡعٰدُوۡنَ ﴿ۚ۳۲﴾
But those who seek to go beyond that, it is these who are transgressors —وَالَّذِیۡنَ ہُمۡ لِاَمٰنٰتِہِمۡ وَعَہۡدِہِمۡ رٰعُوۡنَ ﴿۪ۙ۳۳﴾
And those who are watchful of their trusts and their covenants,وَالَّذِیۡنَ ہُمۡ بِشَہٰدٰتِہِمۡ قَآئِمُوۡنَ ﴿۪ۙ۳۴﴾
And those who are upright in their testimonies,70:35

وَالَّذِیۡنَ ہُمۡ عَلٰی صَلَاتِہِمۡ یُحَافِظُوۡنَ ﴿ؕ۳۵﴾
[✲]And those who are strict in the observance of their Prayer.اُولٰٓئِکَ فِیۡ جَنّٰتٍ مُّکۡرَمُوۡنَ ﴿ؕ٪۳۶﴾
These will be in the Gardens, duly honoured.فَمَالِ الَّذِیۡنَ کَفَرُوۡا قِبَلَکَ مُہۡطِعِیۡنَ ﴿ۙ۳۷﴾
But what is the matter with those who disbelieve, that they come hastening towards thee,عَنِ الۡیَمِیۡنِ وَعَنِ الشِّمَالِ عِزِیۡنَ ﴿۳۸﴾
From the right hand and from the left, in different parties?اَیَطۡمَعُ کُلُّ امۡرِیٴٍ مِّنۡہُمۡ اَنۡ یُّدۡخَلَ جَنَّۃَ نَعِیۡمٍ ﴿ۙ۳۹﴾
Does every man among them hope to enter the Garden of Bliss?کَلَّا ؕ اِنَّا خَلَقۡنٰہُمۡ مِّمَّا یَعۡلَمُوۡنَ ﴿۴۰﴾
Never! We have created them of that which they know.فَلَاۤ اُقۡسِمُ بِرَبِّ الۡمَشٰرِقِ وَالۡمَغٰرِبِ اِنَّا لَقٰدِرُوۡنَ ﴿ۙ۴۱﴾
But nay! I swear by the Lord of the easts and of the wests, that We have the powerعَلٰۤی اَنۡ نُّبَدِّلَ خَیۡرًا مِّنۡہُمۡ ۙ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَسۡبُوۡقِیۡنَ ﴿۴۲﴾
To bring in their place others better than they, and We cannot be frustrated in Our plans.فَذَرۡہُمۡ یَخُوۡضُوۡا وَیَلۡعَبُوۡا حَتّٰی یُلٰقُوۡا یَوۡمَہُمُ الَّذِیۡ یُوۡعَدُوۡنَ ﴿ۙ۴۳﴾
So leave them alone to indulge in idle talk and play until they meet that day of theirs which they are promised,70:44

یَوۡمَ یَخۡرُجُوۡنَ مِنَ الۡاَجۡدَاثِ سِرَاعًا کَاَنَّہُمۡ اِلٰی نُصُبٍ یُّوۡفِضُوۡنَ ﴿ۙ۴۴﴾
[✲]The day when they will come forth from their graves hastening, as though they were racing to a target,خَاشِعَۃً اَبۡصَارُہُمۡ تَرۡہَقُہُمۡ ذِلَّۃٌ ؕ ذٰلِکَ الۡیَوۡمُ الَّذِیۡ کَانُوۡا یُوۡعَدُوۡنَ ﴿٪۴۵﴾
With their eyes cast down; and disgrace will cover them. Such is the day which they are promised.Al-Ma‘arij — The Ascending Stairways
