بِسۡمِ اللّٰہِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِیۡمِ ﴿۱﴾

Al-Waqi‘ah
The Inevitable Event
الواقعة
97 verses · Maulawi Sher Ali translation
اِذَا وَقَعَتِ الۡوَاقِعَۃُ ۙ﴿۲﴾
When the Event comes to pass —56:3

لَیۡسَ لِوَقۡعَتِہَا کَاذِبَۃٌ ۘ﴿۳﴾
[✲]None can say that its coming to pass is a lie —56:4

خَافِضَۃٌ رَّافِعَۃٌ ۙ﴿۴﴾
[✲]Some it will bring low, others it will exalt.اِذَا رُجَّتِ الۡاَرۡضُ رَجًّا ۙ﴿۵﴾
When the earth will be shaken with a terrible shaking,وَّبُسَّتِ الۡجِبَالُ بَسًّا ۙ﴿۶﴾
And the mountains will be shattered — a complete shattering.فَکَانَتۡ ہَبَآءً مُّنۡۢبَثًّا ۙ﴿۷﴾
They shall all become like dust particles scattered about,وَّکُنۡتُمۡ اَزۡوَاجًا ثَلٰثَۃً ؕ﴿۸﴾
And you shall be divided into three groups:56:9

فَاَصۡحٰبُ الۡمَیۡمَنَۃِ ۬ۙ مَاۤ اَصۡحٰبُ الۡمَیۡمَنَۃِ ؕ﴿۹﴾
[✲]First, those on the right hand — how lucky are those on the right hand! —56:10

وَاَصۡحٰبُ الۡمَشۡـَٔمَۃِ ۬ۙ مَاۤ اَصۡحٰبُ الۡمَشۡـَٔمَۃِ ؕ﴿۱۰﴾
[✲]Second, those on the left hand — how unlucky are those on the left hand! —وَالسّٰبِقُوۡنَ السّٰبِقُوۡنَ ﴿ۚۙ۱۱﴾
Third, the foremost; they are the foremost;اُولٰٓئِکَ الۡمُقَرَّبُوۡنَ ﴿ۚ۱۲﴾
They will have achieved nearness to God.فِیۡ جَنّٰتِ النَّعِیۡمِ ﴿۱۳﴾
They will be in the Gardens of Bliss —56:14

ثُلَّۃٌ مِّنَ الۡاَوَّلِیۡنَ ﴿ۙ۱۴﴾
[✲]A large party from among the early Muslims,56:15

وَقَلِیۡلٌ مِّنَ الۡاٰخِرِیۡنَ ﴿ؕ۱۵﴾
[✲]And a few from the later ones,عَلٰی سُرُرٍ مَّوۡضُوۡنَۃٍ ﴿ۙ۱۶﴾
Seated on couches inwrought with gold and jewels,مُّتَّکِـِٕیۡنَ عَلَیۡہَا مُتَقٰبِلِیۡنَ ﴿۱۷﴾
Reclining thereon facing each other.یَطُوۡفُ عَلَیۡہِمۡ وِلۡدَانٌ مُّخَلَّدُوۡنَ ﴿ۙ۱۸﴾
There will wait on them youths, who will not age,بِاَکۡوَابٍ وَّاَبَارِیۡقَ ۬ۙ وَکَاۡسٍ مِّنۡ مَّعِیۡنٍ ﴿ۙ۱۹﴾
Carrying goblets and ewers and cups filled out of a flowing spring —لَّا یُصَدَّعُوۡنَ عَنۡہَا وَلَا یُنۡزِفُوۡنَ ﴿ۙ۲۰﴾
No headache will they get therefrom, nor will they be intoxicated —وَفَاکِہَۃٍ مِّمَّا یَتَخَیَّرُوۡنَ ﴿ۙ۲۱﴾
And carrying such fruits as they choose,وَلَحۡمِ طَیۡرٍ مِّمَّا یَشۡتَہُوۡنَ ﴿ؕ۲۲﴾
And flesh of birds as they may desire.وَحُوۡرٌ عِیۡنٌ ﴿ۙ۲۳﴾
And there will be fair maidens with wide, lovely eyes,56:24

کَاَمۡثَالِ اللُّؤۡلُوَٴ الۡمَکۡنُوۡنِ ﴿ۚ۲۴﴾
[✲]Like pearls, well preserved,جَزَآءًۢ بِمَا کَانُوۡا یَعۡمَلُوۡنَ ﴿۲۵﴾
As a reward for what they did.لَا یَسۡمَعُوۡنَ فِیۡہَا لَغۡوًا وَّلَا تَاۡثِیۡمًا ﴿ۙ۲۶﴾
They will not hear therein any vain or sinful talk,اِلَّا قِیۡلًا سَلٰمًا سَلٰمًا ﴿۲۷﴾
Except only the word of salutation, ‘Peace, peace.’56:28

وَاَصۡحٰبُ الۡیَمِیۡنِ ۬ۙ مَاۤ اَصۡحٰبُ الۡیَمِیۡنِ ﴿ؕ۲۸﴾
[✲]And as for those on the right hand — how lucky are those on the right hand! —فِیۡ سِدۡرٍ مَّخۡضُوۡدٍ ﴿ۙ۲۹﴾
They will be amidst thornless lote-trees,وَّطَلۡحٍ مَّنۡضُوۡدٍ ﴿ۙ۳۰﴾
And clustered bananas,وَّظِلٍّ مَّمۡدُوۡدٍ ﴿ۙ۳۱﴾
And extended shade,وَّمَآءٍ مَّسۡکُوۡبٍ ﴿ۙ۳۲﴾
And flowing water,وَّفَاکِہَۃٍ کَثِیۡرَۃٍ ﴿ۙ۳۳﴾
And abundant fruit,لَّا مَقۡطُوۡعَۃٍ وَّلَا مَمۡنُوۡعَۃٍ ﴿ۙ۳۴﴾
Neither failing, nor forbidden,وَّفُرُشٍ مَّرۡفُوۡعَۃٍ ﴿ؕ۳۵﴾
And they will have noble spouses —اِنَّاۤ اَنۡشَاۡنٰہُنَّ اِنۡشَآءً ﴿ۙ۳۶﴾
Verily, We have created them a good creation,فَجَعَلۡنٰہُنَّ اَبۡکَارًا ﴿ۙ۳۷﴾
And made them virgins,عُرُبًا اَتۡرَابًا ﴿ۙ۳۸﴾
Loving, of equal age56:39

ثُلَّۃٌ مِّنَ الۡاَوَّلِیۡنَ ﴿ۙ۴۰﴾
[✲]A large party from among the early Muslims,وَثُلَّۃٌ مِّنَ الۡاٰخِرِیۡنَ ﴿ؕ۴۱﴾
And a large party from the later ones.56:42

وَاَصۡحٰبُ الشِّمَالِ ۬ۙ مَاۤ اَصۡحٰبُ الشِّمَالِ ﴿ؕ۴۲﴾
[✲]But as for those on the left hand — how unlucky are those on the left hand! —فِیۡ سَمُوۡمٍ وَّحَمِیۡمٍ ﴿ۙ۴۳﴾
They will be in the midst of scorching winds and scalding water,وَّظِلٍّ مِّنۡ یَّحۡمُوۡمٍ ﴿ۙ۴۴﴾
And under the shadow of black smoke,لَّا بَارِدٍ وَّلَا کَرِیۡمٍ ﴿۴۵﴾
Neither cool nor of any good.اِنَّہُمۡ کَانُوۡا قَبۡلَ ذٰلِکَ مُتۡرَفِیۡنَ ﴿ۚۖ۴۶﴾
Before this they lived a life of ease and plentyوَکَانُوۡا یُصِرُّوۡنَ عَلَی الۡحِنۡثِ الۡعَظِیۡمِ ﴿ۚ۴۷﴾
And used to persist in extreme sinfulness.وَکَانُوۡا یَقُوۡلُوۡنَ ۬ۙ اَئِذَا مِتۡنَا وَکُنَّا تُرَابًا وَّعِظَامًا ءَاِنَّا لَمَبۡعُوۡثُوۡنَ ﴿ۙ۴۸﴾
And they were wont to say, ‘What! when we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised again,اَوَاٰبَآؤُنَا الۡاَوَّلُوۡنَ ﴿۴۹﴾
‘And our fathers of yore too?’قُلۡ اِنَّ الۡاَوَّلِیۡنَ وَالۡاٰخِرِیۡنَ ﴿ۙ۵۰﴾
Say, ‘Yes, the earlier ones and the later onesلَمَجۡمُوۡعُوۡنَ ۬ۙ اِلٰی مِیۡقَاتِ یَوۡمٍ مَّعۡلُوۡمٍ ﴿۵۱﴾
‘Will all be gathered together unto the fixed time of an appointed day.ثُمَّ اِنَّکُمۡ اَیُّہَا الضَّآلُّوۡنَ الۡمُکَذِّبُوۡنَ ﴿ۙ۵۲﴾
‘Then, O ye that have gone astray and have rejected the truth,لَاٰکِلُوۡنَ مِنۡ شَجَرٍ مِّنۡ زَقُّوۡمٍ ﴿ۙ۵۳﴾
‘You will surely eat of the tree of Zaqqum,فَمَالِـُٔوۡنَ مِنۡہَا الۡبُطُوۡنَ ﴿ۚ۵۴﴾
‘And will fill your bellies therewith,فَشٰرِبُوۡنَ عَلَیۡہِ مِنَ الۡحَمِیۡمِ ﴿ۚ۵۵﴾
‘And will drink thereon of boiling water,56:56

فَشٰرِبُوۡنَ شُرۡبَ الۡہِیۡمِ ﴿ؕ۵۶﴾
[✲]‘Drinking like the drinking of the camels that suffer from an insatiable thirst.’ہٰذَا نُزُلُہُمۡ یَوۡمَ الدِّیۡنِ ﴿ؕ۵۷﴾
This will be their entertainment on the Day of Judgment.56:58

نَحۡنُ خَلَقۡنٰکُمۡ فَلَوۡلَا تُصَدِّقُوۡنَ ﴿۵۸﴾
[✲]We have created you. Why, then, do you not accept the truth?اَفَرَءَیۡتُمۡ مَّا تُمۡنُوۡنَ ﴿ؕ۵۹﴾
What think ye of the sperm-drop that you emit?ءَاَنۡتُمۡ تَخۡلُقُوۡنَہٗۤ اَمۡ نَحۡنُ الۡخٰلِقُوۡنَ ﴿۶۰﴾
Is it you who have created it or are We the Creator?نَحۡنُ قَدَّرۡنَا بَیۡنَکُمُ الۡمَوۡتَ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَسۡبُوۡقِیۡنَ ﴿ۙ۶۱﴾
We have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented56:62

عَلٰۤی اَنۡ نُّبَدِّلَ اَمۡثَالَکُمۡ وَنُنۡشِئَکُمۡ فِیۡ مَا لَا تَعۡلَمُوۡنَ ﴿۶۲﴾
[✲]From bringing in your place others like you, and from developing you into a form which at present you know not.وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمۡتُمُ النَّشۡاَۃَ الۡاُوۡلٰی فَلَوۡلَا تَذَکَّرُوۡنَ ﴿۶۳﴾
And you have certainly known the first creation. Why, then, do you not reflect?اَفَرَءَیۡتُمۡ مَّا تَحۡرُثُوۡنَ ﴿ؕ۶۴﴾
Do you see what you sow?ءَاَنۡتُمۡ تَزۡرَعُوۡنَہٗۤ اَمۡ نَحۡنُ الزّٰرِعُوۡنَ ﴿۶۵﴾
Is it you who grow it or are We the Grower?56:66

لَوۡ نَشَآءُ لَجَعَلۡنٰہُ حُطَامًا فَظَلۡتُمۡ تَفَکَّہُوۡنَ ﴿۶۶﴾
[✲]If We so pleased, We could reduce it all to broken pieces, then you would keep lamenting:اِنَّا لَمُغۡرَمُوۡنَ ﴿ۙ۶۷﴾
‘We are ruined!بَلۡ نَحۡنُ مَحۡرُوۡمُوۡنَ ﴿۶۸﴾
‘Nay, we are deprived of everything.’اَفَرَءَیۡتُمُ الۡمَآءَ الَّذِیۡ تَشۡرَبُوۡنَ ﴿ؕ۶۹﴾
Do you see the water which you drink?ءَاَنۡتُمۡ اَنۡزَلۡتُمُوۡہُ مِنَ الۡمُزۡنِ اَمۡ نَحۡنُ الۡمُنۡزِلُوۡنَ ﴿۷۰﴾
Is it you who send it down from the clouds, or are We the Sender?لَوۡ نَشَآءُ جَعَلۡنٰہُ اُجَاجًا فَلَوۡلَا تَشۡکُرُوۡنَ ﴿۷۱﴾
If We so pleased, We could make it bitter. Why, then, are you not grateful?اَفَرَءَیۡتُمُ النَّارَ الَّتِیۡ تُوۡرُوۡنَ ﴿ؕ۷۲﴾
Do you see the fire which you kindle?ءَاَنۡتُمۡ اَنۡشَاۡتُمۡ شَجَرَتَہَاۤ اَمۡ نَحۡنُ الۡمُنۡشِـُٔوۡنَ ﴿۷۳﴾
Is it you who produce the tree for it, or are We the Producer?نَحۡنُ جَعَلۡنٰہَا تَذۡکِرَۃً وَّمَتَاعًا لِّلۡمُقۡوِیۡنَ ﴿ۚ۷۴﴾
We have made it a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers.فَسَبِّحۡ بِاسۡمِ رَبِّکَ الۡعَظِیۡمِ ﴿٪ؓ۷۵﴾
So glorify the name of thy Lord, the Great.56:76

فَلَاۤ اُقۡسِمُ بِمَوٰقِعِ النُّجُوۡمِ ﴿ۙ۷۶﴾
[✲]Nay, I swear by the shooting of the stars —وَاِنَّہٗ لَقَسَمٌ لَّوۡ تَعۡلَمُوۡنَ عَظِیۡمٌ ﴿ۙ۷۷﴾
And, indeed, that is a grand oath, if you only knew —اِنَّہٗ لَقُرۡاٰنٌ کَرِیۡمٌ ﴿ۙ۷۸﴾
That this is indeed a noble Qur’an,فِیۡ کِتٰبٍ مَّکۡنُوۡنٍ ﴿ۙ۷۹﴾
In a well-preserved Book,لَّا یَمَسُّہٗۤ اِلَّا الۡمُطَہَّرُوۡنَ ﴿ؕ۸۰﴾
Which none shall touch except those who are purified.تَنۡزِیۡلٌ مِّنۡ رَّبِّ الۡعٰلَمِیۡنَ ﴿۸۱﴾
It is a revelation from the Lord of the worlds.56:82

اَفَبِہٰذَا الۡحَدِیۡثِ اَنۡتُمۡ مُّدۡہِنُوۡنَ ﴿ۙ۸۲﴾
[✲]Is it this Divine discourse that you would reject?وَتَجۡعَلُوۡنَ رِزۡقَکُمۡ اَنَّکُمۡ تُکَذِّبُوۡنَ ﴿۸۳﴾
And do you make the denial thereof your means of livelihood?فَلَوۡلَاۤ اِذَا بَلَغَتِ الۡحُلۡقُوۡمَ ﴿ۙ۸۴﴾
Why, then, when the soul of the dying man reaches the throat,وَاَنۡتُمۡ حِیۡنَئِذٍ تَنۡظُرُوۡنَ ﴿ۙ۸۵﴾
And you are at that moment looking on —وَنَحۡنُ اَقۡرَبُ اِلَیۡہِ مِنۡکُمۡ وَلٰکِنۡ لَّا تُبۡصِرُوۡنَ ﴿۸۶﴾
And We are nearer to him than you, but you see not —فَلَوۡلَاۤ اِنۡ کُنۡتُمۡ غَیۡرَ مَدِیۡنِیۡنَ ﴿ۙ۸۷﴾
Why, then, if you are not to be called to account,تَرۡجِعُوۡنَہَاۤ اِنۡ کُنۡتُمۡ صٰدِقِیۡنَ ﴿۸۸﴾
You cannot bring it back, if you are truthful?فَاَمَّاۤ اِنۡ کَانَ مِنَ الۡمُقَرَّبِیۡنَ ﴿ۙ۸۹﴾
Now if he be of those who have attained nearness to God,فَرَوۡحٌ وَّرَیۡحَانٌ ۬ۙ وَّجَنَّتُ نَعِیۡمٍ ﴿۹۰﴾
Then for him is comfort and fragrance of happiness and a Garden of Bliss;56:91

وَاَمَّاۤ اِنۡ کَانَ مِنۡ اَصۡحٰبِ الۡیَمِیۡنِ ﴿ۙ۹۱﴾
[✲]And if he be of those who are on the right hand,56:92

فَسَلٰمٌ لَّکَ مِنۡ اَصۡحٰبِ الۡیَمِیۡنِ ﴿ؕ۹۲﴾
[✲]Then ‘Peace be on thee, who is from those on the right hand.’وَاَمَّاۤ اِنۡ کَانَ مِنَ الۡمُکَذِّبِیۡنَ الضَّآلِّیۡنَ ﴿ۙ۹۳﴾
But if he be of those who reject the truth and are in error,فَنُزُلٌ مِّنۡ حَمِیۡمٍ ﴿ۙ۹۴﴾
Then for him will be an entertainment of boiling water,وَّتَصۡلِیَۃُ جَحِیۡمٍ ﴿۹۵﴾
And burning in Hell.اِنَّ ہٰذَا لَہُوَ حَقُّ الۡیَقِیۡنِ ﴿ۚ۹۶﴾
Verily, this is the certain truth.فَسَبِّحۡ بِاسۡمِ رَبِّکَ الۡعَظِیۡمِ ﴿٪۹۷﴾
So glorify the name of thy Lord, the Great.Al-Waqi‘ah — The Inevitable Event
